Integration of Metabolic Engineering and Catalytic Upgrading to Produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel from Transgenic Camelina

The widespread use of sustainable aviation fuel still faces challenges from the high costs of feedstocks and conversion. Herein, a novel hybrid process with the combination of metabolic engineering and catalysis was developed to enhance the yield of renewable jet fuel from the genetically modified camelina. It is demonstrated that the transgenic camelina has been developed successfully and contains medium-chain length fatty acids, maximizing the production yield of renewable jet fuel in the “one-pot” biphasic tandem catalytic process (biTCP) over the carbon titania composite supported Ru catalyst under mild conditions. With C14-enriched camelina oil as the feedstock, the highest yield of C8-C22 yield can reach 76.9 wt.% at only 200 oC, accounting for 96.2% of the maximum theoretical yield (79.9 wt.%), and the highest yield of jet-fuel-range hydrocarbons (C8-C16) can reach 43.1 wt.% at 220 oC. Moreover, the oxygen vacancies on the titanium dioxide surface were found to promote the deoxygenation reaction in the biTCP. The work provided a promising strategy for the efficient production of renewable jet fuels from various transgenic plant oil sources.
